Quite simply, windmills electricity is electricity that has been generated using the power of the wind. Oddly enough, when we think about it, wind is just another form of solar energy. It is created by the sun’s uneven heating of the Earth’s atmosphere. Other things affect the speed and direction of the wind such as the terrain, the seas, landmasses, vegetation and so on.
The important thing is we can harness the wind, and mankind has been doing so for millennia with sailing ships, windmills and wind pumps. Windmills harnessed the wind to drive stone mills to grind grain; wind was utilized to power water pumps. In recent times the wind had been harnessed to drive electricity generators. When we use the wind to drive a rotating shaft we have what is known today as a wind turbine.
When we switch on a fan, electricity spins the fan blades and produces wind. A wind turbine generator is the opposite of that: wind spins the ‘fan’ blades and generates electricity. More precisely, the wind spins the blades, which spins the shaft to which they are attached; the shaft in turn is connected to and spins a generator that generates the electricity.
Generators are only efficient at certain wind speeds, and it is imperative that the feasibility of the site and the prevailing wind speeds are studied closely when considering the installation of a wind powered generator.
Wind turbine generators can be used in domestic situations to supplement or replace power purchased from the utilities. A commercially manufactured turbine large enough to generate all the power in domestic situation would probably cost between $7000 and $20,000. In many cases this would not be a viable proposition.
Be aware though that thousands of people throughout the world and particularly in the United States and Canada are building their own turbine generators at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a commercial product. Be advised though, that there are many pitfalls associated with this measure.
Either way, it is very important to make rigorous inquiry.
